Common Problems

There are a number of common problems that can occur in the mouth, and we do our best to provide all the treatment and advice required to address them. Susan Baloul, DMD, MS, DScD, a dual-trained specialist in orthodontics and periodontics at Elegant Orthodontics can help treat and correct these issues and more for patients throughout Boston, Brookline, Norwood and Framingham, MA.

Thumb Sucking

Thumb sucking is a common habit among young children. It can help them feel secure and relax, but can have negative impacts on the growth of their teeth. Unfortunately, a prolonged habit of thumb sucking can affect how the teeth erupt from the gums and align, causing an “open bite”. If thumb sucking persists past the age of 3, your child runs the risk of developing dental problems. While these can typically be fixed with orthodontic treatments, it’s best to prevent them from occurring in the first place.

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is a common form of gum disease that develops when plaque builds up on the teeth. This can cause the gums to become enflamed and even bleed, and can lead to more severe forms of gum disease that lead to tooth loss. This can be caused by poor nutrition or tobacco use, as well as poor hygiene. The best way to treat and prevent gingivitis from developing is following good dental hygiene, consisting of regular brushing and flossing. Replace your toothbrush every three months, and get softer bristles if it hurts your gums.

Jaw and Teeth Misalignments

People may experience jaw and teeth misalignments for a variety of reasons, and sometimes it may just be how you develop. These can create a crooked smile (crooked teeth) and are one of the leading reasons people choose to get orthodontic care. However, these issues can also interfere with chewing and increase your risk of breaking teeth or developing tooth decay. Unless your misalignment was caused by thumb sucking, there is no way to guarantee that you won’t develop these issues. Luckily, many patients are able to fix misalignment with braces. In most cases, braces can also properly align the jaw, although extreme misalignments may need a different treatment.
