3 Things Adults with Braces are Tired of Hearing
Updated: Apr 23
Having braces as an adult can be one of the most rewarding things you can do to improve your aesthetic appearance and self-esteem. There is a sense of accomplishment in being able to invest in them for yourself as an adult rather than taking them for granted and complaining as a teenager. That being said, there are some definite challenges when it comes to wearing braces as an adult, like feeling that you are too “old” to be going through this process. According to the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), one in five orthodontic patients in the U.S. is an adult, so why is there such a stigma against adults that wear braces? Here are some comments that adults with braces are tired of hearing regarding their teeth.
#1: “Have you heard of Invisalign®?”
At this point, everyone and their mother has heard of Invisalign®; you’re not sharing any information that adults with braces don’t already know. There are many reasons one would elect traditional braces over Invisalign® retainers, such as financial budget or a more severe case of misalignment that only braces can correct. Either way, it’s too late to make any changes now!
#2: “You look so much younger than you are!”
Yes, I’m aware that the majority of people with braces are under the age of 18. No, I’m not still in high school. Contrary to popular belief, having braces and being a teenager are not entirely mutually exclusive. We can’t say that we ever fully get tired of hearing this one though.
#3: “Next appointment”
We’ve all had our fair share of empty promises, but nothing quite compares to the disappointment you feel when your orthodontist assures you that your braces are finally coming off at your next appointment only to find the next month that there is some minor issue extending your time. It stings, but we eventually get used to it.
